Staff Attorney, District Court Trial Bureau

Nassau County Legal Aid Society is seeking entry level attorneys or recent law graduates to work in its District Court Trial Bureau. Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in criminal defense and/or public interest law.

Nassau County Legal Aid Society is seeking entry level attorneys or recent law graduates to work in its Appeals Bureau. Additionally, applicants must have demonstrated interest/experience in appellate advocacy and strong writing skills.

Staff Attorney, Family Court Bureau

Nassau County Legal Aid Society is seeking entry level attorneys already admitted or soon to be admitted to practice who have a demonstrated interest in family law and/or public interest law.

Long Island Regional Immigration Assistance Center Paralegal

Responsibilities:  The Long Island Regional Immigration Assistance Center "LIRIAC" provides expert advice to criminal and family court attorneys on the immigration consequences of their noncitizen clients' criminal/family cases, as required by the 2010 landmark U.S. Supreme Court Decision Padilla v. Kentucky. The LIRAC Immigration Paralegal supports the work of the LIRAC by assisting with intakes, administrative tasks, contact with criminal attorneys, and promotion of the LIRIAC. An integral part of the position requires consistent contact with potentially reluctant attorneys to promote use of the LIRIAC by the 18B panel in Suffolk County. LIRAIC office is housed in the Nassau Legal Aid Society so in addition to LIRIAC responsibilities the position will require similar, secondary job functions relating to NCLAS. Main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct immigration intake interviews with criminal defendants in person and over the phone, including courthouse intakes and visits to jails with attorneys.
  • Correspond and follow up with clients.
  • Manage incoming intakes and referrals.
  • Spanish interpretation for client meetings/correspondence and translation of documentation.
  • Liaise between 18B attorneys and LIRIAC attorney and act as a point of contact for the RIAC including assertive follow-up by phone and email to resistant 18B attorneys.
  • Draft correspondence to 18B panel and/ or administration, as well as to judges and/or other organizations.
  • Manage and update LIRIAC website.
  • Develop and disseminate flyers, advertisements, newsletters, and other promotional material for the LIRIAC.
  • Collaborate and strategize with the LIRIAC on developing mechanisms to draw attorney participation.
  • Prepare, scan, copy, and file legal documents/correspondence/records in case management system/s.
  • Assist in administration of LIRIAC programs such as CLEs or trainings.

Qualifications:  We seek a self-motivated team player who possesses outstanding organizational, interpersonal, communication, writing, and computer skills.  Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree required, paralegal certificate preferred but not required.
  • Fluency in Spanish required, knowledge of other languages is a plus.
  • Must have a car and valid driver's license. Office is in Hempstead NY, but position requires occasional travel to Suffolk County courts and jails.
  • Must be internet savvy. Strong Command of: MSWord, Adobe Acrobat, MSExcel
  • Ability to work independently on multiple tasks as well as with a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in criminal justice and immigrant rights.
  • Experience in immigration law preferred.
  • Marketing or promotional experience a plus.

Nassau Legal Aid is now staffing Human Trafficking Court and are seeking interns to assist with translation and other legal work. The position is available as a volunteer opportunity toward pro bono hours and under limited circumstances as a paid position. Pro Bono Hours: for law students seeking to fulfill New York State Bar's 50 pro bono hours requirement.
