Appeals Bureau
The Appeals Bureau of the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County is a statewide leader in appellate representation. Our Bureau represents assigned clients on appeals of serious felony and misdemeanor convictions, appeals of Family Court orders and final judgments, and on appeals of classifications under the Sex Offender Registration Act. In addition to briefing and arguing appeals, our appellate attorneys handle complex special litigation matters, including Article 78 applications, Writs of Habeas Corpus, Criminal Procedure Law 440 applications, Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act applications, and other post-conviction applications. Our attorneys appear before the New York State Court of Appeals, the Appellate Division, Second Department, the Appellate Term, Ninth and Tenth Judicial Districts, and the Nassau County Supreme and County Courts. Our appellate team has successfully briefed and argued several seminal cases before the Court of Appeals, including: People v. Morales, 28 N.Y.3d 1087 (2016); People v. Best, 19 N.Y.3d 739 (2012); People v. Casey, 95 N.Y.2d 354 (2000); People v. Letterlough, 86 N.Y.2d 259 (1995); and People v. Bing, 76 N.Y.2d 331 (1990).
Additionally, our appellate attorneys routinely meet with and respond to questions of individuals who have been contacted by law enforcement regarding criminal matters, help individuals surrender to local law enforcement regardless of whether we are assigned to their case, and serve as a legal resource for both community members and attorneys statewide. Our Appeals Bureau Chief is Tammy Feman.
