Social Work Bureau:   

Our Social Work Bureau is an integral component of our holistic law practice, assisting attorneys and clients in County Court, District Court, Family Court and Juvenile Delinquency cases.  Our social workers act as liaisons between attorneys and other community support groups and entities to assist clients with respect to substance abuse and mental health needs.

 Our Social Work Bureau utilizes comprehensive assessments in order to gather information about our clients who come from diverse backgrounds. Our Social Workers then coordinate services with these community agencies in order to assist clients to obtain the most appropriate services.  Our social workers advocate for our clients in the courtroom through written and oral submissions by humanizing the client’s lives through a holistic and treatment lens. The Bureau Chief of our Social Work Bureau is Arielle Facompre.

Immigration Unit:

The Immigration Unit of the Nassau County Legal Aid Society provides critical advice and assistance to non-citizen clients (documented or undocumented) regarding the legal consequences of a criminal and Family Court proceeding. The immigration laws of the United States condition deportation and immigration benefits in large part on a non-citizen’s contact with the criminal justice system. The federal government in 2014 instituted polices for the detention and removal of undocumented immigrants from the United States. Much of the basis for prioritizing non-citizens for removal is connected to an immigrant’s criminal history.  Accordingly, criminal convictions, as well as admissions made in the course of criminal or family court proceedings, can often have negative consequences for a person’s immigration status. Our staff attorneys will consult with our immigration unit specialist to ensure that any case disposition takes into consideration an individual’s immigration status.  Our immigration supervisor is Donna Zak.

If you are already represented by an immigration lawyer, the Immigration Unit will try to coordinate with that attorney to achieve a resolution in your criminal case that is as beneficial as possible to your situation; we will also provide our own assessment of your case.

Our office does not provide direct representation in removal proceedings or for individuals seeking status in the country or government benefits.  Such matters are governed by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). If you need immigration representation, and are unable to afford an immigration attorney, there are some non-profit groups that may be able to assist you with your situation, including the Office for New Americans (ONA) which provides referrals for free and confidential services for non-citizens in New York State, including naturalization support, civics test preparation, legal consultation and community workshops.
